from Terraforming Wiki

Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749–1817) was a renowned German geologist who developed an early theory of the Earth's stratification. Although his Neptunist views were later discarded, Werner is celebrated for demonstrating chronological succession in rocks, inspiring his students, and stimulating the field of geology. He is known as the "father of German geology".
