Buoyancy is an upward force exerted by a fluid on an object immersed in it. This force opposes the object's weight and is caused by the pressure difference between the top and bottom of the submerged object. The magnitude of the buoyant force is equal to the weight of the displaced fluid, as stated by Archimedes' principle. Factors affecting buoyancy include the density of the fluid and the volume of the displaced fluid.
