Bismuth, a post-transition metal with symbol Bi and atomic number 83, is a pnictogen exhibiting properties akin to arsenic and antimony. This brittle, silvery-white element occurs naturally, with its sulfide and oxide ores holding commercial importance. Despite being less dense than lead, bismuth is the most diamagnetic and one of the least thermally conductive metals. Surface oxidation imparts a pinkish hue, while heated oxidation creates a striking iridescent effect through thin-film interference.
