Bromine, a halogen, is a reddish-brown liquid element with atomic number 35. Its symbol is Br. Vaporizing readily at room temperature, bromine has an intense, unpleasant odor. In 1825 and 1826, chemists Carl Jacob Löwig and Antoine Jérôme Balard each isolated the element. They named it using the Ancient Greek word "bromos", meaning "stench", due to its sharp smell.
